The subject of Icons of Mom (2024) explores the influence that my memories and the created associations of things in our home have on my recollections of my mother who passed away when I was 12. The smell of citrus and ginger or the taste of clementine altoids and the coos of mourning doves on the power line all remind me of mom. Combined with fuzzy memories attached to her collection of novelty salt and pepper shakers and a pile of outdated windsurf gear help to provide the cathartic comfort of my memories of mom. Icons of Mom (2024) is a hand-embroidered trapunto quilt on silk, in her favorite color, pale blue. Icons included in the tapestry I associate with her and they are rooted in the natural world and of mundane objects. These objects that trigger specific memories of my mother for me can also be translatable to audiences with similar familial and chosen relationships and long-lasting associations of loved ones once they are gone.
